Reading Corner

Dear Sterling Families,

In an effort to help you support your child’s reading at home we wanted to share a website that will help you to determine books that are the right fit for your student. Your child is assessed three times per year using the NWEA test. This test provides the students ‘Lexile Level’ as a reading level. There are many types of reading levels you may be familiar with, such as Fountas and Pinnel, Reading Counts, Accelerated Reader, and Rigby. They all use different systems, be it number or letter, to provide a measure of a student’s reading ability. The Common Core State Standards recognize Lexile levels as the preferred reading leveling system.

The "Lexile" website is a very user-friendly site we wanted to make you aware of to assist your child in selecting books to read that are the right fit. On this site you can work with your child to generate a book list tailored to their ability and interest level, which you can then bring to your local library or bookstore to find great books that your child wants to read!

Step 1 - Once you are in the "Lexile" website, input your child’s lexile range in the minimum and maximum fields on the home page.  If you do not have this information from an NWEA report handy, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher and they can quickly and easily retrieve that information for you!

Step 2 - Allows you and your child to select all of their interests and preferred reading genres.

Step 3 – Click ‘submit’ and your book list will be generated according to level and interest.
