Good Afternoon Sterling Families,

Happy Friday! We made it through the first week, and it is fantastic to continue to see students in our hallways and classrooms each day. We sure missed them!

Thank you for continuing to support us in reminding students of the new procedures that are in place during this school year. They are doing a great job wearing their masks when needed, helping to keep things clean and sanitized, and socially distancing throughout the day. Even in the midst of change, our Jets are working together to still make this a fantastic start to the school year.

Due to the fact that we are unable to have students using normal drinking fountains, we have put filling stations in the building until our new drinking fountains with water fillers arrive from being on backorder. Please encourage your student to bring a water bottle to school that they can refill and help stay hydrated throughout the day. We will have cups for students to use, but having a water bottle will allow them to keep water with them throughout the school day.

Go Jets!

Drop Off and Pick-Up Procedures

We are continuing to work through our Drop Off and Pick-Up procedures, and as we continue to follow these processes together, we will continue to work to increase the efficiency of them. We have a large amount of students both getting picked up and dropped off each day, which does add to the time it takes to get through the line each day. Please consider having your student use the bus transportation provided by the district if this is a possibility. As you noticed on Thursday, we have already made changes to increase the efficiency and safety of these procedures.

Thank you for your patience and understanding, and continuing to follow the attached procedures. Remember, if you don't contact the office by 3:00 p.m. to let us know your student is being picked up, and they are not a scheduled pick-up for that day, we cannot guarantee that they will not already be on their bus and off campus before your vehicle gets to us in the pickup line.

Important Forms to be Signed (if you have not completed these yet, please do so before Tuesday)

If you have yet to complete the following forms, please be sure and do so before school starts.

Important Dates
    • October 8: Picture Day
A Few Reminders
    • Please remember that our pickup and drop off procedures are different this year (see above). If you must pickup and/or drop off your student, it is imperative that you read, understand, and follow the procedures above and review the attached information.
    • Masks will be required while students are riding the bus, transitioning in the hallways, and may also be needed during some activities within the classroom to maintain the safety of students and staff.

For Remote Students

Here is some information for our remote students from our remote teachers:

Our virtual teachers have gathered some tidbits and information that they would like to share with you about our remote learning program.  We hope these will be helpful in answering any questions you might have, and also allow you to reference them at any time should problems or incidents arise.

School Email Access – Students all have their own school issued email.  This can be found by going to gmail.com and putting in their email address (firstnamelastname@airportschools.com).  The password has been reset to “airport1” for all students. Once logged in, this will take you to their student email account and all of their invitations and login information can be found here.  They must use this email to access their virtual classrooms and receive information.

Google Classroom – Students should have received an invite to their teacher’s google classroom.  Most of the students have done a great job with this!  If you have not yet joined your teacher’s google classroom, please do so!  This invite was sent through the student’s school email account.  Parents, once your child is added to their teacher’s classroom, you can be added (by the teacher) as a guardian.  You will get daily reports of your child’s progress, but cannot see all the information in the classroom.  That access is strictly limited to students.  If you need to login to see what they are doing, you will need to login to google classroom under your child’s account, or be present with them when they login.  Then you can see everything they can see.

Specials – Specials teachers will be added to your child’s google classroom and will post there so that everything is located in one place.  Everything your student needs from all teachers will be located there.

Patience – PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE have patience with your teacher(s) and technology personnel. We know you are anxious for your child to get back to learning! Our virtual teachers have been working non-stop to try to get everything working properly, and to reply to communication as quickly as possible.  Some grades are larger than others and getting students everything they need is taking more time than they had hoped.  Though our teachers have a working knowledge of technology and google classroom, they aren’t always able to diagnose every technology issue you might be experiencing at home.  We know technology doesn’t always work perfectly, and so if a student cannot get on, or your internet is experiencing problems, we understand.  Try your best to troubleshoot those items, and remember that the lessons are live streamed so that in case of technology or scheduling issues, you can watch them later when things are cooperating.  Your virtual teachers are trying to build the plane as they fly it.  It will get better and run more smoothly as we continue through this together!

Our breakfast and lunches are going well, and continue to be free for all students for the time being. If you didn't get a chance to read the procedures for ordering lunches in advance (which helps us out and saves classroom time), please see the attached information.

We are still finalizing the process for getting parents access to the parent portion of our student database, and will be getting those directions out as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.

Please see the attached flyer for information regarding Cub Scouts.

Have a wonderful weekend. We're excited to welcome our Sterling students back on Monday morning!

Good Afternoon Sterling Parents,

I hope you are all doing well!

Just a few quick reminders for those who need to pick up their students at the end of the day.
  • Parents must stay in their vehicles throughout the entire process.
  • If your child needs to be picked up and you have not notified us that your child will be picked up every day, please call the office before 3:00 p.m. so we can make sure your child doesn't get on the bus, or email Sue Thomas at sthomas@airportschools.com
Thank you for your continued patience and flexibility. Have a great rest of your day!

Good Morning Sterling Families,

Happy Labor Day! I hope you're enjoying it and having a wonderful weekend with your families.

I wanted to send a brief last minute update with a few reminders. Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 8, is the first day of the 2020-2021 school year for students in grades 1-4. Young 5s and kindergarten students will have orientation tomorrow (see attached flyer), and their first day will be Wednesday, September 9. Some of our students will be starting remote, while others will be joining us face to face first thing in the morning. We're prepared, excited, and can't wait to see you.

As you make final preparations for tomorrow, please be reminded of the following:
  • Remote students should have received an email from their child's remote teacher. Remote students are expected to be either in attendance at the live lessons for instruction from their teacher, or able to watch those lessons via provided links at a later time and at their convenience.
  • Unfortunately, we cannot have parents in the building to volunteer, or during drop off and pick up. Please refer to the attached process we will follow for these times during this school year. Please follow these, be safe, and be patient. Thank you!
  • If you need to drop off school supplies, please do so outside of morning and afternoon arrival and dismissal hours, as all of our building staff will be supporting students in safely finding their way during these times.
  • We will have plenty of adults present in the hallways during the morning and afternoon to assist students in finding their way, especially on these first days. Please help us by reminding them who their classroom teacher is before they come to school tomorrow.
  • Until further notice, all students who would like are able to enjoy breakfast and lunch for free. This free option is available for a limited time until the grant being used to fund it is no longer available.
  • Students are required to wear masks while on the bus and in the hallways. If they are being dropped off, they should exit the vehicle with a mask on. All Sterling staff will be wearing masks at all times, per state guidelines.
  • Students will get an outdoor recess with their class (weather permitting) every day for at least 30 minutes. Students will not have to wear masks while outside.
It's been way longer than it should be since we've had the privilege of seeing students in the halls of Sterling Elementary, and I can't wait to welcome them back in the morning. Whether face to face or remote, it's going to be a great year, and our teachers have already committed countless hours in preparing to make it the best year possible for our students and families. Thank you all for supporting us and allowing us to support you. We got this. It's going to be awesome. It's going to be fun. Have a fantastic Labor Day, Sterling, and rest up. Tomorrow morning will be here in no time!

Good afternoon Sterling Families,

Happy Friday and welcome to the last weekend of summer before we officially kick off the start of the 2020-2021 school year. We are excited and ready to go!

A lot of the information included in this email was also communicated last week, but please take the time to read and understand this information to ensure that you are prepared and ready to go on Tuesday. We appreciate your help and support in this process.

It's never too early to start thinking about birthdays, and I know that some of our families enjoy bringing treats in to share with classes. As always, please be sure that this is cleared with the classroom teacher first, and this year, all treats must be purchased and individually wrapped items. Unfortunately, we are unable to allow homemade items this year, nor are items that are not each wrapped individually allowed. Thank you for your understanding!

With parents not being able to come into the building during our morning and afternoon procedures, we want you to know that we will have adults even more visible inside the building than normal to help students safely find their way. If you haven't had a chance yet, class lists are still posted on the doors of Sterling, and will remain there over the weekend. You can help us by ensuring that your student(s) know who their homeroom teacher is before the show up on Tuesday. Rest assured, we will get them where they need to be regardless, and are excited to see them! If your child has a concern about this on the first day, just remind them to look for an adult. We'll be there to help!

Go Jets!

Drop Off and Pick-Up Procedures

Obviously things are going to be different this year when it comes to dropping off and picking up students. As always, our goal is the safety of students, while in this season, also adhering to appropriate health guidelines for this process. If you are planning to pick up or drop off your student(s), please carefully follow the guidelines listed below. We'll get better at this as we go, so thank you for your patience as we learn together! The map referred to in the guidelines below is attached.

  • School hours are from 8:50 a.m. - 3:41 p.m. each day. Unlike past years, doors will not be able to be opened early, and parents must remain in their vehicles for both drop off and pickup. No parents will be allowed in the building during drop off and pickup times.

  • The north loop is for buses, and the map for dropping off and picking up students can be found on the following page or reverse side of this page. Unless otherwise directed from Sterling staff, parents should not exit using Fessner Road.

  • The main building doors are for students coming to and from buses only. Parents will drop off and pickup students using the entrance doors off the parking lot (between the main building and the Media Center).

  • Buses will always exit Sterling using Fessner Road.

  • Parents will exit Sterling using the Grafton Road exit next to Wagar (see map).

  • There is no parking in either of the loops in the front of the building at any time.

  • Morning drop-off can be a hectic time if proper procedures are not followed. Sterling staff follow specific drop-off procedures in order to ensure all students are safe. Your patience is needed to make sure all of our kids remain safe. Thank you for your patience and understanding, especially during these first several weeks as we all learn together!

  • We will begin letting students into the building from cars in the drop off loop no earlier than 8:41 a.m. (or close to that time). Students cannot be dropped off before this time. Students should exit the car at the corner by the parking lot entrance doors (between the main building and the Media Center). Adults will be in this location to assist and take signatures during end of day pickup, and also to assist students when being dropped off in the morning, as parents must remain in their vehicles.

  • The passing lane of the loop is closed in order to prevent students from crossing traffic during drop-off, and to ensure one way traffic

  • Dismissal: Remember to notify the office by 3:00 p.m. if you plan on picking up your student. Parents must wait inside their cars in a line, with the beginning of the line outside the parking lot entrance doors (between the main building and the Media Center). Sterling staff will be available at approximately 3:35 p.m. to start sign-out procedures for students, and will come to your car window to facilitate this process. As students enter vehicles, please follow the path indicated with the arrows on the map to safely exit campus.
